Careers in Nigeria is a roller coaster ride, round and round and round, up, then down, sideways . we can categorize career moves into various shells- Conservative: I am grateful for this job, whatever happens , I am going nowhere.
- Risk Taker: it is all about the money, at the right price, I can work anywhere.
- Organised: properly planned move, based on personal goals and ambitions.
The human Resources department believe they have the understanding of how the world revolves though they are the relatively insensitive in most Organisations in Nigeria ( I have friends in HR).
In Nigeria, we have a pot pourri of Organisations, from what we call " one man business" the owner of the business, is the HR/Admin, sales manager, operations manager et al. Another kind of business is the "shop owner" Nigeria being an importing Nation, we have shops everywhere, the workforce here is a simple structure of a salesboy/sales girl. We have our Public Service, popularly known as Civil Servant ( though they are neither Civil nor Servants), we have small and medium enterprise owned by Foreigners ( Popularly known as Indians and Chineese) we have Contract staff ( I would define this as those who dream to work for the Company, but do not mind working there at any cost) whom are not working for the Company directly, Banks and Telecom companies enjoy this practice. We have indirect employ, this happens when the hire just delivers on set targets and no strings attached. We still have apprenticeship and internships, but we will not put this in scope today.
Our educational system in Nigeria is a huge heap of theoretical jargon, we have a hard time adding up and making the summary of the page, so we graduate from the University with a sole aim of getting a good job . this job comes in differing views. Unfortunately we are not equipped with the key skills required for the job which also differs from our mindset, hence the young graduate is confused. Blue chip companies have an induction training where they brush up new employees with what they require at the company, this includes lingua franca, culture. Buddy systems exist here and traditions of coaching and mentorship. An above average employee is guaranteed to climb the ranks however do not succeed in unstructured systems. In unstructured systems, the confusion and conflict in the system can be disruptive however survival instinct modes tends to set in, however if structure is introduced, change is unwilling.
Going back to our 3 shells, we realize that there is a synergy.
In all sincerity, kissing butt does not take you far.
