Be strong enough to let others be.
“Whatever stops Growing begins to die” anonymous.
The cliché Create the world you want to live in, bounces off our shoulders.
Candidly, I have realised that imagination is quite difficult in the Nigerian Education system, the Kids cram the multiplication table as early as 4 years old, stop colouring and drawing by 8.
In Nigeria, “carry Monkey Syndrome” is rampant; this syndrome can be explained in simple terms of “YES SIR!”
The Carry Monkey Syndrome cuts every sphere, Religion, Politics, Professional, domestic, neighbours, entertainment, the list goes on.
Bisi, whom explained this syndrome to me, and made me aware of the working of this syndrome, the practicability of the syndrome in Office politics, he explains in a meeting of Area Sales Managers’ “why do you like make things difficult for yourselves?” He goes,” if management expects the task to be done, you do the task, regardless your opinion, you do not have to believe in the strategy, just execute it!” I look at Shewa, Shewa kicks me in the shin, and pinches me “keep quiet” Shewa’s eyes say to me.
Bisi is a STAR manager, he drives for results and potential, he has his point of view, he gets his results. Stakeholders want results; they need you to meet the deadline regardless of circumstance.
We are created to create, we are unhappy when we are told what to do, unhappier when we are paid to do things we do not want to do. Unfortunately very few jobs will let you do want you like, corporate cultures, mission statements, are built upon the stakeholders and business owners views, if you do not discover yourself before you begin your career, it can be liken to marrying a spouse you never fell in love with, if the motivating factors to stay married is not strong enough, you either get a divorce or remain unhappily married.
I once attended a job interview, I realised I was more intelligent than my interviewer, I had to smile politely, I did not get through to the next round not surprisingly because I did not “carry Monkey” I doubt if I would have succeeded on the job.
I have met a manager that is patient enough to explain every detail, he has created a high performing team.
As a manager, the qualiy of your team is a direct proportion of your strength, hence forcing down your belief system down your team’s throat is not the right thing to do.
The human body is made up of many parts whom have different functions, likewise your team.
Be patient and allow them to be them.
Achieving results comes easily when your team are inspired to win.
Life is worth living happy.
